For a long time I've told myself I don't have a problem with alcohol because I go to work and function well in every day life. But slowly my life has come to revolve around when I can have my next drink. Willpower simply isn't enough anymore.

Hello Kay, long time since I've posted here. I think you might consider trying the Sinclair Method, in which you take a small pill of something like Naltrexone (before drinking). In most people it can change their drinking and reverse the craving of alcohol by the brain and even completely zero one's addiction to alcohol. But it has to be done in a specific way and works best with support and counselling, but even going online groups can help you achieve that. An overview here:..
Naltrexone for Alcohol Dependence
The Sinclair Method for Alcohol Use Disorders is an evidence-based treatment for problematic drinking developed by Dr. John D. Sinclair. Unlike traditional treatments that require complete abstinence from alcohol, the Sinclair Method allows you to continue drinking alcohol at the beginning of treatment.
In fact, treatment success depends on the continued consumption of alcohol in combination with the prescription medication Naltrexone.
Naltrexone is at the heart of the Sinclair Method (TSM) for Alcoholism. When you take Naltrexone prior to drinking, it blocks endorphins, the naturally occurring opiates in the brain, from being released when alcohol is consumed.
When the endorphins are blocked, there is no “buzz” or rewarding experience, and the alcohol doesn’t make you feel the pleasure that drives you to drink excessively.
Over time, your brain learns not to associate alcohol with pleasure, resulting in reduced cravings and improved control over alcohol use. Naltrexone must be taken at least one hour before your first drink.
